Lara and I met at a Denver RAWArts exhibition where we both were featured artists. The one word that I can use to describe her is – electric! I remember she came over to say Hi with a such a strong presence that the next thing I knew, it was an hour later and mad people were congregating around us.
Her work is simply breathtaking, with an equine motif that is just…killin’ it! Lara was kind enough to give us a few minutes of her time to explain her upbringing, process, and art as it relates to wellness. Check out the interview and a sampling of her work below.
Lara Branca is a native Coloradoan, born in Denver in 1975. Her school-year, city upbringing was contrasted by summers spent at Girl Scout camp, where she developed a deep and abiding love for wilderness, the land, and horses. Her life has been shaped by a thirst for traveling and living in wild places, as well as an inclination to interpreting these experiences through dance and visual art.
Lara received her BA degree in Painting with Honors from Fort Lewis College in Durango CO in 2006, and earned a MFA degree in Painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2016. She currently lives and works in deep rural SW Colorado, where she pursues painting in-situ landscapes and horses.
